Ketika ada yang mengatakan bahwa gempa nantinya akan berkekuatan lebih dari 8 SR ini yang perlu diluruskan !
Gempa merupakan fenomena alam yang disebabkan oleh ” melenting-nya sebuah pegas alami“. Pegas alam ini memang digencet oleh gerakan tektonik pada bermacam-macam batuan yang memiliki tingkat pelentingan berbeda-beda. Disinilah perlu diperhatikan bagaimana prediksi gempa itu.


Meramal atau lebih enaknya disebut prediksi memanglah memungkinkan secara ilmiah. Khususnya untuk prediksi gempa ada tiga aspek harus ada.


Ketiga aspek gempa yang ingin diketahui itu adalah sebagai berikut :


* Dimana tempatnya. Mencakup area yang cukup sempit.
Efek bencana sangat merusak sekitar radius 10-20 Km ( di Jogja, Padang). Sedangkan prediksi masih dalam segmen berukuran 300-500 Km. Lokasi ini sering menjadi krusial dalam “persiapan” atau mitigasi gempa.
* Seberapa besar kekuatannya. Dalam skala gempa tertentu.
Saat ini yang diketahui besarnya “potensi” yang tersimpan dalam satu segmen. Berapa yang “bakalan” dilepaskan masih belum (susah) diketahui. Bisa sekali besar, bisa kecil-kecil banyak, atau bahkan slow quake (silent quake) !
* Kapan terjadinya. Dalam rentang waktu yang memadai.
Saat ini hanya bisa (mungkin) rentang 5-10 tahunan. Sedangkan kejadiannya hanya dalam orde menit. Nah tergantung sejauh mana tuntutan (keinginan) yg diperlukan dalam mitigasi dan diperlukan masyarakat awam.
